Fat and Stem cells
As a future tool also reprogrammed cells, called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells could be used, which, are capable of turning into most types of cells in the body. So far iPS could also be derived most efficiently from adipose derived MSC.
Scientists are keen to obtain these cells to study disease and, one day, use them to grow new tissue and even replace organs. Fat is continuously becoming a favoured source of stem cells. The implications are not only medical; the aesthetic aspects of fat will be presented in this scientific session.

Leading of the session: Prof. Heinz Redl
Director of Ludwig Boltzmann Institute forExperimental und Clinical Traumatologyand coordinator of the Austrian Cluster for Tissue Regeneration with the primary goal toimprove diagnostic and therapeutic measures in trauma care specifically in the area of intensive care and tissue regeneration
One approach in tissue reconstruction is to accelerate wound healing by means of growth factors or special wound dressings. Another of use is stem cells from various sources, such as bone marrow, fatty tissues, placenta and umbilical cords. Potential applications are in the Central Nervous System (CNS), Peripheral Nervous System, Cartilage/Tendon Regeneration, Hemostasis/Soft Tissue Therapy, and Bone regeneration.
Heinz Redl is internationally one of the foremost capacities in tissue engineering and will present the science required in this often chaotic field.
Further featured speakers in this session:
Mark Berman, MD
Mark practices cosmetic surgery in the West Los Angeles area. He's the Immediate Past (2010 – 2011) President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Although he's a UCLA graduate, he's currently a clinical instructor in facial plastic surgery at the University of Southern California. He's well known for his longtime work with fat grafting – particularly to restore the three-dimensional volume of the aging face.
Dr. Berman will present his work at the California Stem Cell Treatment Center and also his concept of the "Three Dimensional Face(Space) Lift".
Dr. med. Gerd G. Gauglitz, MMS
After medical studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich, Dr. Gauglitz completed his Master of Medical Science at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas.
He won the "Young Investigators Award"of the International Federation of Shock Societies and was nominated for the "American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Research and Education Foundation Scholarship Award"in2008. He was also awarded for the "Best Oral Presentation 2008", at 49th Annual National Student Research Forum; UTMB, Texas and the"American College of Surgeons Resident Award 2007".
Dr. Gauglitz completed postdoctoral Research Fellowships at the Dept. of Surgery and Burns, Shriners Burn Hospital for Children, in Galveston, Texas and at the Dept. of Plastic Surgery, National University of Singapore.
Since 2008, Dr Gauglitz has been supervising the scar ambulance and is assistant directorof the Dept. ofAesthetic Dermatology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.
Gerd will speak about the "Effect of (adipose derived) stem cells on wound repair, regeneration and scarring".
Matthias Sandhofer, MD
Dr. Matthias Sandhofer, from Linz, Austria, is the anatomist under cosmetic surgeons. Dr Sandhofer will speak about the "Anatomy of aging fat compartments, treatment with fillers".
Tony Mangubat, MD
Dr. Tony Mangubat, from Seattle, USA, is probably the most creative cosmetic surgeon, he is the long term teacher for the board review course and will demonstrate his technique using fat for body contouring.
